THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN ARROYO CITY
Aside
from fishing, most visitors enjoy kicking back on the pier or patio,
sipping on a cool beverage and watching the world go by on the Arroyo
Colorado River. Except for holiday weekends, life on the Arroyo is slow
and easy. Arroyo City is located right in the middle of the best fishing
and bird watching in Texas, maybe anywhere.
THE WHARF RESTAURANT is located on the water
and is accessible by boat as well as auto. The Wharf offers a family
type atmosphere, smoking is only allowed outside on the deck overlooking
the river. Enjoy seafood and Mexican cuisine Friday evening through
Sunday evening.

CHILI WILLIE'S is the local
bar and grille in Arroyo City. Their burgers are famous far and wide
but they also offer a fairly typical menu ranging from fried shrimp
to chicken fried steak. Grilled ribeye steaks are cooked to order on
Friday and Saturday nights, be sure to ask for grilled onions too!
Music sometimes but always entertaining regardless.
Almost always open for lunch and dinner.
THE ARROYO CITY COUNTRY STORE might have
you covered if you forgot something from town or home. Besides having
the only gasoline in town, they sell the usual dry goods and general
provisions. The country store is one of the newest additions to Arroyo
City and we're really glad to have a store in town.
The Rio Grande Valley is well known as
an exciting birding destination. Arroyo City is no exception! Visitors
can easily spot various herons, egrets, plovers, falcons and hawks to
name just a few of the hundreds of species that inhabit or migrate through
town.
Rio
Grande Valley and Mexico:
Of course, the rest of the Rio Grande Valley
and Mexico is only a short distance from Arroyo City. If you like to
play golf, there are over 30 golf courses across the Valley. The town
of South Padre Island is about 45 minutes away. There are towering condos,
restaurants and shops of all types and sizes and oh yea, there's the
beach, the surf, the Gulf of Mexico and lots of cantinas or watering
holes.
Mexico is about an hour away. We love to stroll down the street of Nuevo
Progresso, sipping on a frozen margarita and shopping the colorful stores
and sidewalk shops before sitting down to a fine dinner, which may include
our own fresh fish as the entrée.
The
Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge abuts Arroyo
City and the headquarters are nearby. The Refuge has hiking trails as
well as miles of drivable site-seeing roads. We offer Dove
hunting trips in September and October. Our hunting fields are
right next to the Refuge and often hold as many birds as anywhere else
in the Valley.
Still
undiscovered by the multitudes, Arroyo City is a retirement / fishing
village that either allows one to step away from it all or venture out
to discover some of the ingredients of the Magic Rio Grande Valley.
Of course, Arroyo City is a fishing destination first and foremost and
we're fortunate that it lies in the mid section of the bay where the
best fishing grounds are located. Quite often, fishing guides from Port
Mansfield and South Padre Island find themselves somewhere near the
mouth of the Arroyo by mid-day. The mid section of the bay offers the
clearest waters, more islands (structure), western lagoons and therefore
better fishing than any other part of the bay system.
Discover Arroyo City. Discover sight fishing in near Caribbean-like
waters in Texas! Then kick back, relax and let this sleepy little fishing
village soothe your soul.
